79th Street (1)
The vibes out here are classic Upper West Side: wealthy, white, and a little boring. The architecture is European-grand, yet the people dress American-flab. It’s the kind of stop where a dog’s haircut (at Canine Styles) will cost more than most people’s entire monthly budget. But there are three gems off this stop that make it worth a visit!
I spy the subway entrance. Do you?
1. New York Comedy Club: For an uptown laugh
2. Zabar’s: For “the best rugelach” that Project 472’s husband has ever tried
3. Riverside Park: For strolling, picnicking, biking, running, and dogs.
Some Riverside Park Notes:
Walk a few blocks towards the Hudson River and you’ll hit a long stretch of a park that’s lovely in summer time for a stroll or picnic. The park has two layers to it: the upper green stroll, which you’ll hit first, and the lower riverside walk/bike/run path, which also has some green patches for a river-facing picnic.
Park accessibility is really well coordinated with the subway system. The entrances to the park match with the subway stops. For example, there’s an entrance to the park on 79th street, but not 80th or 78th street. So, if you’re going to the park, just walk west straight from the subway exit.
Riverside Park, at the 79th street entrance headed north, on the upper level (go further west, and you’ll hit the lower river level).
