Astor Place (6)
The subway brings you to a concrete square with a Wegmans. It looks like an unpromising stop at first sight, but it’s actually one of Project 472’s classic favorites!
Walk a block or two from the station and you’ll get to:
Veselka: Project 472’s favorite Ukranian Diner. Get the potato pierogis, boiled.
Cha-An: A small, upstairs-room tea house. Perfect for a quiet cup of fancy tea with a little snack or dessert.
Webster Hall: Grungy, rite-of-passage 19+ club
And, a block from the station is the start of St. Marks Place, a street that’s worth walking in its entirety.
St. Marks Place is bustling with vintage by-the-pound stores, bubble tea joints, quick bites, funky shops, late-night dessert shops, and the like. It’s somehow equally touristy and local. While it’s geared towards college and early-career folks, you’ll find people of all ages hanging out.
Try:
St. Marks Comedy Club: Catch a show!
Village Works: A funky local bookstore and thrift shop. The owners are a bit curmudgeony—they wouldn’t accept a Project472 sticker because they “wouldn’t read the blog anyway”—but at least they were honest.
Spot Dessert Bar: Easy to miss because it’s on the lower level of the street… but usually the line will let you know where it is.
I could keep dropping recs but … just walk the street and you’ll end up with a list of your own!
Walking along St. Marks Place, right where it starts from the Astor 6 station.
